Harveys Supermarkets' Bagger Places Second in National CompetitionBagger in Georgia' Danny Goodwin

February 18, 2010

SALISBURY, N.C. - Harveys Supermarkets bagger Danny Goodwin, the 'Best Bagger in Georgia,' finished second at the National Grocers Association (NGA) Best Bagger National Championship Thursday in Las Vegas.

Goodwin, a team member at Harveys Store 2349 in Waynesboro, Ga., competed against 25 other top baggers from grocers across the country. His second-place finish was the highest ever for Harveys and the state of Georgia.

Competitors had to bag a number of items, including bread, eggs, cereal, chips, canned goods, noodles, boxed cookies and boxed dinners into reusable bags. They were then judged on speed, weight distribution, correct placement of products, appearance and attitude.

Goodwin, 21, said the energy from the crowd and other competitors in the Paris Las Vegas Hotel was intense. Coworkers, family and friends of the competitors cheered wildly for their favorite baggers.

"It was really fun, extremely loud and very serious," said Goodwin, of Augusta, Ga. "Everybody was really fast. It was exciting!"

To prepare for the event, Goodwin practiced his bagging skills for four hours everyday for five months with Harveys' coworkers. His bagging strategy is simple - "block out the walls of the bag and put heavy products on the bottom. However, bagging for customers and training for the competition are totally different. You wouldn't bag people's groceries as fast or as heavy as this," he said.

Goodwin, a Harveys team member for five years, won top honors in the Georgia Food Industry Association (GFIA) State Best-Bagger Championship in July 2009, earning $2,000 in cash and prices and the opportunity to compete at the national competition.

"I'm thrilled for Danny!" said Tom Robinson, Harveys vice president and chief operating officer. "He's worked very hard on his training since he won the Georgia State Championship last summer. His coaches had him well prepared for the competition with the best baggers in the country. A good strategy and the spirit to win all came together perfectly for Danny and the Harveys team as he bagged his way to finish second place among the best of the best!"

Goodwin, who is studying accounting at Augusta State University, said although bagging groceries won't be part of his long-term future, he's learned a valuable life lesson.

"Whatever you're doing, try to be the best at it," he said. "Who would've thought a bagger out of Waynesboro, Ga., would be competing for the national bagging title?"

Goodwin, whose second-place finish earned him $5,000 in cash and prizes, said he plans to use his winnings to pay off his car, buy books for school and have a little left over to spend.

NASHVILLE, GA - Harveys Supermarkets will be awarded the Mark Trail award by the National Weather Service during a June 21, 2007 ceremony in Washington, D.C. Now in its 11th year, the Mark Trail Award program honors individuals and organizations that use or provide NOAA Weather Radio receivers and transmitters to save lives and protect property.

Harveys Supermarkets, a Food Lion LLC affiliate, has been selling the weather radios to help raise awareness of the importance of early warnings for severe weather. During the promotion, all 68 stores participated in the promotion.

Spearheading the promotion was Lisa Smith, brand manager for Harveys Supermarkets. Along with local weather host Yolanda Armadeo, Smith appeared regularly during weather segments on WALB-TV.

"We are very excited to receive the Mark Trail Award and we hope that it will encourage other individuals and companies in our community to realize the importance of the NOAA Weather Radio," said Smith. "We have had customers tell us that these radios literally saved their lives because they were able to get to shelter before a storm struck."

The Mark Trail Awards are named for the nationally syndicated comic strip character that serves as the campaign symbol for the NOAA Weather Radio All-Hazards program. Since 1995, Jack Elrod, writer and illustrator of Mark Trail, and King Features Syndicate have been strong advocates for publicizing severe weather safety through the use of the radios. In recent years, the strip's education message has included the fact that anyone listening to NOAA Weather Radio All-Hazards has instant access to the same lifesaving weather reports and all-hazards information provided to meteorologists, emergency personnel and the media.

Harveys Hit Hard in Americus, Ga., Bounces Back to Serve the Community

March 7, 2007

Link to larger view With two stores initially closed by the tornados in Americus, Ga., the Harveys team quickly mobilized to get the stores open as soon as possible, and to aid the community.

Prior to the deadly tornados, which devastated parts of the south, there were four supermarkets serving Americus, Ga. After the storm, the Winn Dixie in town was a total loss and the Wal-Mart sustained considerable damage. Though both Harveys stores were initially closed, one was open and running by mid-afternoon the day after the storm, and the second was reopened three and a half days later.

On the scene in Americus was Harveys Brand Manager, Lisa Smith, who assisted in getting the stores back up to serve our customers and helped coordinate donations and volunteer efforts to help the victims. Harveys donated two truckloads of water and two truckloads of ice through the Red Cross.

“I am thankful for our company and the humanitarian efforts that went into this disaster relief,” Smith said. “We were also able to donate fruit, sausage and lunch meat, which was in high demand. We had vendors who truly stepped up to the plate to help in this time of need by offering products to cook and their presence to help cook and serve.”

The JohnBoy and Billy’s Grillin’ Team came with their big grill and cooked hamburgers, hot dogs and pork loin for two and a half days. According to Smith, the disaster victims were so grateful and appreciative of the food that Harveys was giving away. “Looking back,” she said, “we estimate having cooked enough to serve 2,500 people.”

“Although I was there and know that Harveys did a good deed by feeding the victims, community service workers, our associates and anyone who was in need, understand that we were only a few in a mass of many. I was touched by the number of volunteers. I thank each person with Food Lion LLC who contributed their time and efforts to this disaster relief.”

J.H. Harvey Jr., Legendary Georgia Grocer Succumbs to Cancer

August 18, 2005

NASHVILLE, Ga. - Joseph Hillman Harvey Jr., known throughout central and south Georgia as Joe Harvey, the man behind the Harveys supermarket chain, died today after a long battle with cancer.

Harvey, 76, started working in his father’s grocery stores when he was five years old and helped found the J.H. Harvey Company Inc., in 1950. Emphasizing friendly customer service and a wide selection of fresh meats and local products, the Harveys chain grew from a handful of stores in the early 1950s to 45 locations in Georgia and north Florida in 2003, when he sold the company to Delhaize Group, the parent company of Food Lion.

Mr. Joe Harvey understood completely the bond that exists between a family and its local grocery store, said Tom Robinson, Harveys chief operating officer. He believed in no excuses and shouldered 100 percent of the responsibility for Harveys. He instilled in every Harveys store three basic principles exceptional customer care, low prices and developing the best team members in the grocery business.

Through the years, Harveys customers felt as if they knew Joe Harvey personally from his TV commercials and frequent store visits. From the early 1950s until 2005, when his health declined significantly, he never missed a store grand opening, where he would personally welcome customers. His desire was that Harveys stores always lived up to the company motto, The Friendliest Store in Town.

Born in 1929 in Nashville, Harvey served customers iced soft drinks in his father’s store when he was 5 years old. By the time he was nine, he worked daily in the store and did so until he graduated from high school. After attending college, Harvey returned to the family business and was appointed secretary of the J.H. Harvey Co. at age 21. In 1980 he became president and CEO of the company and was made chairman of its board in 1989.

In 2003, Harvey negotiated the sale of the company to Delhaize Group, which has grown the chain to 66 stores, serving 500,000 customers weekly in Georgia and north Florida. After the 2003 sale, Harvey maintained a lesser role with the company, continuing to appear at store openings and other events. In 2004, Mercer University in Macon, Ga., awarded Harvey an honorary doctor of commerce in recognition of his accomplishments and contribution to the food industry in the state of Georgia.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Martha Brumley Harvey, and several children, grand children and great-grand children. Memorial services will be Saturday, August 20th, 11:00 AM at Strickland Memorial Stadium at Epworth by the Sea, St. Simons Island, Georgia. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Epworth by the Sea, P. O. Box 20407, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.

Mr. Harvey will be missed. He has certainly left a legacy in the stores he built, the customers he served and the fine persons he employed, Robinson said. Harveys customers can take comfort knowing our stores will honor the memory of Mr. Harvey by remaining the friendliest grocer in town.
